The Mission of God- Unlocking the Bible’s Grand Narrative
18 weeks/Location: room BO8A and BO8B (open area under sanctuary)/Teacher: Peter Murphy
The name of the class is taken from the title of a book by Christopher J. W. Wright, director of international ministries for John Stott Ministries and former teacher of Old Testament at All Nations College in England. It is hoped that this class will be an opportunity to study the unity of Scripture and what it tells of God’s nature and God’s people and how they relate regarding God’s mission in God’s world. Do not let the mass of the text put you off from considering this class- efforts will be made each week to provide Scripture readings for those with adequate time to prepare for class and extra reading for those with too much time too their hands! Also, the purpose of assigned reading will be to allow for lots discussion in class, making our study practical and challenging for all participants. We look forward to being challenged together in regard to God’s mission for us and our church. Suggested donation for the book—$25.
Women’s class: Tracing the Origins of Grace
18 weeks/Teacher: Mary White/Location: Enclosed nursery area
Last spring the women’s class very briefly glanced at “the red thread” that runs through scripture from Genesis to Revelation. We will now go back and look in depth at the great events and passages of the Bible to ask “what did they mean then and what do they mean now?” The goal is to slot all our bits and pieces of accumulated Bible knowledge into the big picture and get beyond simply stories and text recognition. Come with what you do, or don’t know about scripture. We will consider how God deals with individuals, nations and the human race with profound purpose and overwhelming grace. We will discuss what this grace and purpose currently means for us in 2008 as we live in light of past events. In the New Testament we will see the culmination of Old Testament grace personified in Christ.
This is not a word study of grace, but rather putting flesh on the gracious working of the purposeful God as revealed in the events and passages of scripture, though Bible study and discussion.
Who do you know who isn’t saved?
Where will they go if they die without Christ?
18 weeks/ Teacher: Larry McLaughlin/ Location: Mezzanine
Discover how to reach them biblically and confidently in “The Way of the Master—Basic Training Course” by Ray Comfort and Kirk Cameron. Learn to overcome your fears by using a simple, powerfully effective way to make the gospel make sense to those you care about. Kirk and Ray will teach you how to bypass the intellect (the place of argument) and speak directly to the conscience (the place of the knowledge of right and wrong)— the way Jesus did.
And they don’t just tell you how to witness—they show you. Through fascinating real-life conversations, you can “eavesdrop” as they witness to people from all walks of life—gang members, atheists, cult members, intellectuals, and others.
Through weekly homework assignments, you’ll be coaxed to gradually step out of your comfort zone. It couldn’t be more exciting or more effective. Do it for someone you love.
Parenting by Design not by Default
11 weeks /Teachers: Carl and Cathy Blatchley/ Norm and Debbie Neilson/ Location: Fellowship Hall
Parenting will be the topic of a Sunday school class this winter and spring. The class will follow a similar format to the marriage class this fall. Parenting by Design not by Default will consist of 11 videos by Drs. Paul and Virginia Friesen and will be supplemented with other material with questions and lively discussion. All of us who are concerned about intentional parenting will benefit from this class. Some of the topics will include: “Have a Plan for Raising your children”, “Participate: Enter into Their Worlds”, “Parenting Includes Discipline”, “Encourage Purity” and “Play and Pray with and for Your Children”. Join us for an interesting and application oriented series with a clear biblical basis.
Unless the LORD builds the house, its builders labor in vain.
